{"id":5251,"date":"2013-01-17T19:07:51","date_gmt":"2013-01-17T19:07:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.glokal.org\/dear-white-people\/"},"modified":"2013-01-17T19:07:51","modified_gmt":"2013-01-17T19:07:51","slug":"dear-white-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/glokal.org\/en\/dear-white-people\/","title":{"rendered":"Dear White People"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Settler Sister&#8221; Gillian Schutte started the year with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thoughtleader.co.za\/gillianschutte\/2013\/01\/02\/dear-white-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter to her white fellow citizens<\/a> and thus once again flared up the debate in South Africa about historical responsibility and the strategies of anti-racist and decolonial struggles. In their <a href=\"http:\/\/mg.co.za\/article\/2013-01-11-00-theres-no-unlearning-whiteness-despite-what-anti-racists-say\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">response<\/a>, Black Consciousness activists Athi-Nangamso Esther Nkopo and Andile Mngxitama criticize Schutte for producing herself as the good white woman and suggesting that whiteness can be individually discarded or transformed into a good, anti-racist whiteness. Jackie Shandu&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thoughtleader.co.za\/readerblog\/2013\/01\/10\/blacks-fight-your-own-battles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">critique <\/a>is more directed at blacks who are celebrating Schutte and thus indulging their longing for the white messiah rather than fighting their own battles. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/2013\/jan\/15\/south-africa-race-debate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Here <\/a>is a collection of many worthwhile comments in response to the letter and on the debate as a whole. Schutte then also <a href=\"http:\/\/mg.co.za\/article\/2013-01-16-dear-white-people-theoretical-wars-and-podium-envy\">spoke up<\/a> again yesterday. Such politically engaged and intellectually high quality debate in the mainstream press &#8230; And all that is left for us to do is to get angry about the thin-board drilling in <a href=\"http:\/\/leserservice.zeit.de\/diesewoche\/2013\/04\/web\/?r=ZO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zeit <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spiegel.de\/politik\/deutschland\/warum-kinderbuecher-politisch-korrekt-umgeschrieben-werden-a-878115.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spiegel<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Settler Sister&#8221;
