The notion of separate and competing nation-states persists not only in Germany. This is largely entrenched by historically distinct national narratives. In contrast, we see the need for a transnational space of remembrance. In this project, we aim to explore the global interconnections between history and the present. We are addressing students, teenagers, young and older adults, opinion leaders, museum staff, and the broader public. After all, examples of global connections and stories—such as those of oppression and resistance—can be found in many places! However, these histories are often not written down, or their global connections are not remembered.
The Project
The project is based on digital city maps of Berlin, Bremen, Frankfurt, Kassel, Cologne, and Eberswalde, created in collaboration with local researchers and groups. For each of these cities, these maps highlight locally rooted global historical connections through:
– Biographies of people who played a role in the respective city
– Thematic city tours exploring global histories
– Events that illustrate connections to global history
In this way, the map fosters an awareness of international interconnectedness through shared, globally networked histories.

Activities
- Development of Digital Cartography: Global Erinnern. The launch of the Global Erinnern cartography took place on August 26, 2022, as part of the Documenta15 art fair in Kassel.
- Further development and translation of global history materials, such as the e-learning tool connecting the dots. History(s) of oppression and resistance .
- Educational Programs: City Tours, Workshops for Students, and Workshops for Museum Staff
Global Erinnern is a collaborative project of glokal e.V., ISD-Bund e.V., Recherche international e.V., and EPIZ-Berlin e.V. The project is also supported by Tahir Della, a researcher specializing in postcolonialism and anti-racism in Berlin.
